Family Activities:

Crayola Experience

Crayola Experience

60 East Broadway, Bloomington, MN

Kids can dive into a splash of color at this interactive experience that’s part museum on Crayola’s history, but mainly a supersized art studio and play area aimed at kids 12 and under. Families can try out big neon doodle boards, see their computer drawings projected onto an animated wall, create a personalized crayon label, melt crayons into molded shapes such as a ring or race car, play with clay, draw dresses for a virtual fashion show and try spin art with melting crayons. And, of course, there are stations for coloring and fresh crayons to use. Word to the wise: make sure kids are in clothes that can get messy.

Crafty kids will love the variety and take their time. High-energy kids and toddlers may prefer the playground area. There also is a snack area and treats for kids who get hungry, but don’t want to leave. Families also can get their hands stamped for re-entry later in the day if they need to take a break or want to return to catch the Crayon Factory live theatre show about crayons that runs several times throughout the day.

The gift shop, where families can go without paying admission, includes a selection of tins that can be filled with your pick of colors from a giant “Pick Your Pack” wall of crayons and markers. It’s right up there with LEGO’s Pick-a-Brick wall for grabbing attention and inspiring creativity.

Opened in late May 2016, Crayola Experience can be found on the third floor near Rainforest Café and above the L.L. Bean store.
