Fort Christiansvaern

Hospital Street, Christiansted, St. Croix

The Virgin Islands were once inhabited by Danish settlers, and this fort is a throwback to the island’s days under Danish rule. Built in 1749, Fort Christiansvaern is the best-preserved of five forts on the island. Named for Denmark and Norway’s King Christian VI, the fort was destroyed by a hurricane and rebuilt in 1771. Last used as a fortress in the mid 1800s (where it provided protection from Caribbean pirates), the fort was also a police station and a courthouse.
