One of the more popular trails in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the moderate, four-mile Kilauea lki Trail has its share of switchbacks and climbs, and is “equivalent to climbing down and up a 40-story building,” according to the trail guide. The reward? A fascinating exploration of a rim and crater floor of a volcano that erupted in 1959. Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, is the reputed home of Pele, the volcano goddess. The Kilauea Visitors Center is a sensible first stop, with its variety of educational exhibits. Visit the national park’s website for up-to-date information on lava activity.
