Sturdy and built of the area’s iconic pink quartzite, a historic former school was repurposed as the Washington Pavilion, now home to a performing arts center, art museum and Kirby Science Discovery Center, an interactive favorite for families.

The science center includes more than 100 hand-on activities from making stop-action films and using the science of pulleys to lift quarry rocks to wildlife exhibits and a beehive you can watch in action. You can get combination tickets to watch shows at the Wells Fargo CineDome.

$6, students 3 to 17; $9, military; $11, seniors; $14, adults; first Fridays of the month are free, and hours are extended until 8 pm.
