Just 20 minutes away, head to Newport News to experience one of the largest maritime museums in the world. The Mariners’ Museum is America’s National Maritime Museum, operating for more than 75 years. Featured in the museum are the remains of the USS Monitor, the ironclad Civil War ships. The exhibit gives visitors the chance to walk the deck of a replica, see actual ship artifacts and check out the action of battle in the theater. The museum showcases a variety of artifacts, ship models and arts and crafts from around the world. Outside, enjoy Mariners’ Park and its 5-mile Noland Trail on Lake Maury. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and 12 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
