You don’t get much more New Englandy than this rambling farmhouse at the base of Crotched Mountain, a small ski area in southern New Hampshire. The house, built in the early 19th century, was once a stop on the Underground Railroad — it’s been added onto piecemeal over the years, now consisting of three connected buildings with no fewer than 13 fireplaces (three of which are in the guestrooms).

While most rooms only have a double bed, several share a bathroom and can be combined to form a family suite; with the reasonable prices, it still comes out to about the same as a suite in a city hotel. Two rooms on the ground floor in particular offer easy access to the backyard with a huge swimming pool with a view of the mountains, and ample space for kids to run around. Guests can ski across the street to the mountain, or in the summer or fall can head up the hill for a nice hike with a fine view. Breakfast is included, and in the evenings, the innkeepers also serve a light dinner with dishes such as eggplant lasagna and posole stew.

Beautiful, comfortable, friendly place to stay

by Andrea S

Stayed for two nights in August with my partner. A beautiful old house in an absolutely stunning location. John, the innkeeper, is absolutely wonderful - friendly and accommodating. The location offers a wonderful balance of peace and quiet along with friendly encounters at breakfast and the Saturday night tavern. The surroundings are a bit daunting on a bicycle (we were warned!) but worth the ride - especially the beautiful covered bridge in one of the nearby towns. And if you can manage to make it back up the hill the pool is the perfectly therapeutic place to relax those muscles after a long ride! :)

We loved our stay and are already planning a return in autumn. Absolutely recommend this inn!

Most excellent place to stay!

We can't wait to return! John, the Innkeeper, was like a brother from another mother. He made us feel so welcome and comfortable. He has a great sense of humor - we laughed for two days! Breakfast was a real treat. John & Rose run a sweet, marvelous inn. Speaking of sweet - don't forget to take home some of their delicious homemade jam! You'll be glad you did! Jenn & Curt
