Carnival Corp., the parent company of Carnival Cruise Lines, announced it is building four of the largest cruise ships in the world. The new ships will also be environmentally friendly, the first cruise ships to sail with liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The new 6,600-passenger ships will be the biggest per-capacity ships, carrying 160 more passengers than the current leader, the Oasis-class ships operated by Royal Caribbean. Each of the ships will exceed North American Emission Control Area (ECA) requirements, according to Carnival, utilizing the cleanest burning fossil fuel available. LNG will be used in dual-powered hybrid engines to power the ships 100 percent while at sea.

The ships are slated to be completed by 2022.
