This is a "town centre" hotel, and took us about 15 minutes to walk to the front. Not really a problem as there was plenty to see on the way.
We had a standard room, where the bed was pushed up against the wall so one of us had to crawl over the other to get in and out. one of the reasons for this was the very long beside table, which was totally unnecessary, as was the large radio on it. A smaller bedside table on each side would have worked perfectly. We did ask for a larger room but one wasn't available until the third night, so in the end we didn't bother.
It was slightly annoying that every evening we pushed the table away from the bed and the bed away from the wall, and every morning the chambermaid pushed it back.
The room only had one chair and when `I asked for another we were given a plastic one that looked as though it had come from beside the pool.
The room had a good size bathroom and nice shower, and although we didn't ask for clean towels every day, we were given them. The downside was that they were very thin and on two occasions I had a hole in one.
The staff were all lovely, friendly and helpful. The young lady behind the bar on our first night made us the best gin and tonic we have ever had, and now use the same additional ingredients at home.
On our first night we got to their Italian restaurant just behind a tour and were warned that we might have to wait for service. It didn't happen and the service was superb, as was the food. Breakfast was equally good with no waiting for tea or coffee.
There is a small gym and sauna, which we didn't use, but saw it on the way to the terrace, which had both soft sofas and upright table and chairs, so that you could either sit with a drink from the terrace bar, or play cards on the tables.
The rooftop pool was small, but this isn't a complaint. It was nice to have somewhere to cool off after a spell on the sunbeds.
My wife and I booked to go to PortoBay Marquis because we had previously stayed at the groups Porto Mare Hotel in Madeira. Our good experience at that hotel prompted our visit to the Marquis.
We were not disappointed. The organisation is very efficient; from the booking with the central booking office through to our arrival at the hotel, every detail was planned and worked like clockwork.
This efficiency continued on our arrival at reception; staff were extremely friendly and helpful, I was particularly impressed with the very good english spoken by the staff. We were given ideas of areas to visit which were excellent places to go, particularly the Timeout Market and eating Pasteis de Nata’s at the Manteigaria.
Much has already been said elsewhere in these reviews about the bedrooms at the hotel and I can only endorse the positive ones. We had a junior suite which was entirely adequate for the two of us.
The dining room and bar area, whilst small were comfortable and about the correct size for a medium sized hotel.
The buffet breakfasts were good and similar to the type experienced at the PortoMare.
We were slightly disappointed with the evening meal offer which is Italian with not a pizza in sight; a bit unusual.
All in all I have no hesitation in recommending the Marquis. An excellent place to stay and a good location too; within about 1 mile of all the places to visit in Lisbon city centre, just off the av Liberdade.
