One of the best stays I've ever had anywhere

by tezzaventure

For context, location is most important to me as I spend most of my time outdoors. I've spent 9 nights (after extending 3 or 4 times) at this hotel and I'm in my late 20s.

Location - an 8min ride by scooter from Ubud centre, Nirmala, together with its sister small sister hotel Azadi Retreat next door, is nestled in the midst of vast rice fields and serene jungle in the back. It's a very peaceful and tranquil environment, giving you the real Ubud experience including hearing sometimes the locals singing for a ceremony at a temple somewhere in the jungle. In between the two sister hotels is an old temple, though I've never seen a ceremony taking place there during my 10 days. There is a good local restaurant (warung) just a 3min walk from the hotel but I highly recommend to ask the hotel to organise a scooter and explore the area, which is dotted with Balinese compounds surrounded by rice fields and jungle.

Hotel - Just got completed this year so it's all new. 8 private villas following a path down to a fair sized (approx.) 3x10m infinity pool along the jungle. At its sister hotel (1min walk) they have yoga/meditation and massage facilities along the jungle. That said, the view from bed in your Nirmala villa should be meditation enough. The food is all vegetarian, bought locally every day and cooked by local staff - it's delicious (fyi, I'm not a vegetarian) and I never got served twice the same dish during my stay. Note, no alcohol is served at the hotel. The eating area is open-air yet covered with uninterrupted views of rice fields. The hotel offers to arrange anything for you from tours (e.g. sunrise hike to Mt Batur incl. wake up service by security staff as it's a 2 or 3am start) to transportation around Ubud (incl. staff giving you a free ride into town if not too busy). Note, the sister hotel is popular with yoga groups which can rent the yoga facilities but the Yoga Barn is just a 12min scooter ride away.

Rooms - very clean, spacious, and modern with stone flooring and a perch with 2 chairs and a table overlooking the rice fields. It's basically a room villa with an ensuite bathroom. Matress was great; thick but not too hard nor too soft. Beds made with fresh linen daily and curtains pulled at night as well as a mosquito light outside to keep them out of the room (I never got bitten inside). Large wardrobe with safe, but no fridge, TV, or mosquito nets. The A.C. and fan worked very well.

Bathroom (ensuite) - very clean, spacious and modern. Shower, no bath but a small window yes overlooking the rice fields. Water pressure can be increased to very strong and hot/cold mechanism works very well. Toilet works very well too. Fresh towels provided daily.

Staff - exceptionally friendly, really going out of their way to accommodate your well being and ensure you're having a great time. They're all very knowledgeable about the local area and always all smiles. Thus, a big thank you to Giri, Pita, Ami, Gusti and all the kitchen and support staff as well as to the owners, who add to the (non-enforcing) family atmosphere.

Crowd - mostly 25-35y olds from across the globe, more couples/groups than solo travellers but still a good social atmosphere - almost like at a hostel but you can always retreat to your villa

Serenity at its best!

If you're coming to Ubud for an authentic experience, rice paddy views and a truly relaxing escape then Villa Nirmala has it all. Located a 5min drive from town, the brand new property provides 7 clean, comfortable, modern villas along a beautifully landscaped path that meanders down a rice terrace to a valley of palms below. The villas are spacious & have a sitting area on the deck where you can take in the views. Bathrooms are huge, with amenities made locally from organic ingredients and they smell divine! My days were spent by the pool in pure bliss, reading a book and taking in the sights and sounds of nature and the tranquil surrounds. There's a reception/lounge area where I enjoyed breakfast each morning, & in the late afternoon I sat with a cup of tea and watched as dusk slowly set in over the rice fields, with dragonflies darting around in the distance and some locals working in the fields. It was so peaceful and serene. There are a couple of spas at the neighbouring properties, & Warung Padi Organic less than a 5min walk down the road which serves delicious fresh food from their garden. Lastly but certainly not least the staff at Villa Nirmala truly make you feel at home. They are warm friendly people who provide wonderful hospitality and happy to assist in any way including tours/transport/activity bookings. Thank you to Gusti, Giri, Yanti & all the staff at Villa Nirmala I am leaving totally relaxed and I look forward to visiting next time I need some R&R!
