Nelson’s Dockyard

St. John's, English Harbor

Back when England and France ruled the world (and were involved in their very own arms race), Antigua’s English Harbor was the home base of famed British seaman Horatio Nelson, where he and the British navy stood ready to keep France from taking over Antigua and other Caribbean islands under English-rule. And this still-working seaport dates back to that time, with pretty stone buildings and cobbled streets to wander. The museum gives you a look at Antigua’s seafaring past and present, and lets kids get a taste of what colonial-era sailors faced — including sitting down at a shipboard table and pretending to grab a mugful of grog. When you’re done, stroll among small shops and restaurants to sample Caribbean food and crafts.
