Just an hour via train from Barcelona is the mountainous town of Montserrart, which was built around a monastery and enjoyed by families far and wide. Get off at the Aeri stop to enjoy the tram ride for 360-degree views as your soar within minutes to the mountain.
While adults may prefer a glimpse at the basilica, children of all ages will enjoy the setting, including toddlers who can twirl in the courtyard during the wait to get inside. “Ava Maria” is chanted daily at 1 p.m., except on Sundays when the famous boys’ choir sings.
However, the main feature for kids is the miles and miles of hiking trails that afford even more fantastic views of the area. The trails lead to caves and hermitages, and include easy to difficult walks that can take 45 minutes to an hour or more, the more trails you traverse.
After the walks, return to the center of town to enjoy a meal or snack in restaurants, cafeterias and open-air settings. Along the main road, local farmers offer samplings and sell their cheeses, jams, breads, and pastries, as well. Of course, there are stores to shop in, with a bit of air conditioning to cool off in after a hot summer day’s walk.
